Test Your Emergency Equipment!
Years ago, when I purchase my Pearson 10M, I started to fix many things that were deteriorating, oxidizing or broken. I thought I was keeping up with things, but never took the time to exercise the manual bilge pump, nor try to deploy the lifesling.
I found a cap in one of the cockpit lockers that to me looked like the previous owner left a fuel container cap behind. Thinking I would never need this, I threw it away.
This year I checked the manual bilge pump for operation. It was not working. I looked at the parts list and it turns out that cap I discarded was the inspection cap for the whale pump. I have a new housing with the cap coming in the mail. If I held on to that cap I would have saved some money, plus, if I ever needed that pump in the past years, it would have let me down.
I just replace the bag for the lifesling. It was very deteriorated from UV rays over the years. I found it very hard to pull the sling out of the bag. Again, if I or my mate had to pull it out in an emergency, it would have required more time to deploy and those seconds could be the difference between life and death.
It takes only a few minutes of time to check these things and the benefit is piece of mind and tools that work for you if you ever had to face a crisis situation. Stay Safe!!!
